Words and Meditations

The Very Rev. Sandy Key

Psalm 19

A private prayer I often use is from today’s Psalm: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Verse 14 inspires me to reflect deeply on what I am about to express. More importantly, it reminds me that God is the final authority on what resonates with others.

Words have incredible power—they can build up or tear down, encourage or discourage. As we prepare for the coming of Christ and the pending gatherings of our extended families, it’s vital to reflect on the words we speak. Are they words of hope, love, and joy that align with the message of Advent? Or do they lean toward negativity and cynicism? The words we choose affect those around us and reflect the state of our hearts.

Consider the significance of intentional communication. Each conversation can be an opportunity to share the light and hope Jesus brings into our lives. How can we speak words of blessing with everyone we encounter? What might it look like to embody grace and kindness in our discussions, especially with those experiencing difficulties or who see the world differently than us? By consciously allowing our words to reflect the joy of the Advent season, we become vessels of God’s love in a broken world.

While our words are outward expressions of our inner thoughts, the meditation of our hearts shapes who we are. Throughout this season, you were invited to reflect on the coming of Christ and on our desires, fears, and hopes. Our hearts should center on God’s truth, love, and the promise of redemption epitomized by the Christ child.

Recognizing God as our redeemer invites us to reflect on how Advent is not just about looking forward to celebrating His birth; it’s an opportunity to embrace the whole narrative of redemption. As we remember the ultimate sacrifice that leads to redemption, we are compelled to extend that grace to others. Forgiveness, kindness, and love become our guiding principles as we view others through Christ’s sacrifice.

//This is not a bad practice for the coming family gatherings.//

As we journey through these final days of Advent, let’s commit to being intentional about our words and thoughts. Let them reflect the wonder of the season and the love of our Savior, preparing us not just for the celebration of His birth but for a deeper relationship with Him and each other.

Let us Pray:

Lord, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Help me to speak words of hope and love, reflecting your grace. May my thoughts be centered on you, preparing my heart to receive the joy and peace you offer. Strengthen me and remind me of the gift of redemption that comes only from you. And finally, may my life be a testament to your light, guiding those around me to the true meaning of this season. All this we ask in your Holy Name, Amen.
