July 31, 2020 - Virtual Concert Series Newsletter
The featured artist this week is, once again, the amazingly gifted organist, Nathan Laube. God willing, he will present the annual Frank H. Kenan Memorial Organ Recital at St. Stephen’s on September 20, 2020. This week’s virtual concert is the evening recital which Mr. Laube gave on July 2, 2015 for the OHS (Organ Historical Society) National Convention. It includes Mr. Laube’s transcription of Rachmaninoff’s famous Prelude in G minor (Op. 23, No. 3). After that comes Dupré’s Cortège et Litanie, written after the war, and Herbert Howells’ Psalm Prelude (Set 1, No. 3), inspired by the 4th verse of Psalm 23: “Yeah though I walk through the valley ….” Sonata Eroica, composed in 1930 by the Belgian composer, Joseph Jongen, brings the recital to a brilliant close. Following a long standing ovation, Mr. Laube plays as encore the Andante sostenuto from Widor’s Symphonie Gothique.
