Pleasures of Psalm 19

Readings for March 5, 2024: Reflecting on the Third Sunday in Lent

By Allen Fuller

In the readings for March 3-5, meditation on Psalm 19’s glorifying of the Lord, comes as relief after the strict Imperial instructions of the Ten Commandments from a jealous God in Exodus, St. Paul’s ruminations in First Corinthians about Jews and Gentiles, and Jesus’ anger in the temple, with a hidden reference to his crucifixion and resurrection, in the Gospel of John.

The Psalm celebrates the glories of the heavens as a reflection of God’s glory and His just commandments, which are more valuable than gold and sweeter than honey.  The psalmist also enlists God’s aid in avoiding sin and closes with the timeless request to “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

It seems to me to be a perfect expression of faith.
