God Hears Your Cries

Readings for February 23, 2024: Preparing for the Second Sunday in Lent

The part of the scripture that deeply resonated with me was Psalm 22:22-31. I find it quite natural that, especially in times of crisis or challenges, our instinct leads us to seek God's help. The verse that spoke to me the most was verse 24: "For he did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; he did not hide his face from me but heard when I cried to him."

In the initial part of verse 24, the psalmist beautifully conveys that God doesn't harbor resentment towards those in suffering but rather unveils Himself in a supportive role. The closing words bring it all together, reinforcing the assurance that God hears our cries. This struggle was real for me in my youth, persistently seeking God's help but grappling with impatience and immaturity, making it hard to perceive His support. However, with time, I've witnessed God's works around me, understanding that His plan unfolds in its own time. Even if not immediately visible, having faith has taught me that God has always been there for me.

Our calls to the Lord are often desperate cries for help during challenging times. This Psalm serves as a poignant reminder that God is a deity of compassion and love. I've found an abundance of that love here at St. Stephen’s, my second home. The incredible love and compassion shown by all of you have played a significant role in my faith journey. It has led me to turn to God more frequently than I might have otherwise. Both the St. Stephen’s community and God have worked in tandem to support me during my times of struggle, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
