The Wonders of God’s Creation

Tammy Sofield

Psalm 104

In Psalm 104, what first caught my attention was the descriptions of how God created the earth. Each step looks like it’s done with purpose in a specific way to provide for mankind and all the creatures. While reading through the psalm, I could understand why it is a Psalm of awe. I could envision each verse in my mind. Imagine the earth covered with water. Then God makes the water recede into oceans, lakes, rivers and streams with perfect placement. This created the mountains and valleys. Then plants and trees provide for mankind and animals. A balance is made for animals to hunt at night and man to work at day.

I instantly related with this Psalm, because I enjoy nature, and two of my most favorite places to go is to the mountains and being on a boat on the ocean. These places are peaceful and somehow make me feel closer to God. I’m more relaxed and open. Recently, I went to the mountains. I saw the amazing site of open fields at the base of the mountain and little patches of areas where the leaves were beginning to change. While I was there I saw wild turkeys, deer, a black bear, and a boar in Cades Cove. It was so amazing to see them in their environment. A couple of years ago, when I went to Hawaii, I went whale watching on a small boat. There were some humpback whales swimming around. A mother and baby came nearby and the baby brought it's nose up next to the boat. I was in awe thinking about how God created such a majestic looking animal. In verse 33, it says God touched the mountains and they smoked. It made me also think about when I went to see Kilauea erupting at night while in Hawaii. There was beauty and amazement in the site of the lava but also respect at the thought of what it could do. This does put me in awe of everything God has made for us.

In closing, I selected a couple things from the verses: I will praise my God while I have my being.  I will rejoice in the Lord. At this time of year, we’ll rejoice in Advent and God’s greatest creation:  the coming of his Son, Jesus.
